Sutton Wrestlers Make History at 2010 State Meet

4 Qualifiers, 4 State Medalists, 2 State Finalists, 1 State Champ---4 Great Reasons to Celebrate Sutton Wrestling in 2010.

The preparation for the state tournament and the success started with the effort given by Derek Bailey, Evan Carlson, Mitch Nuss and Mike Shoff over many years.  The support given to them by family, friends and the many coaches who have worked with them over the years resulted in 6th place as a team and finishes to a season that these young men can be proud of for a lifetime. Leading the way for the Mustangs was Michael Shoff who finished the season with a 36-0 record and as a State Champion.  Michael is the first undefeated wrestler in the history of Sutton Wrestling and broke a string of 6 losses for Sutton in the championship match.  Evan Carlson can be very proud as he became a 2010 State Runner-Up in the 125 lb weight class.  Evan ended this season with a 31-5 record and 117 wins for his career which places him second in school history behind his cousin, Aaron Carlson, who was victorious 124 times in his high school career.  Derek Bailey, only a sophomore, earned his 2nd state medal placing 5th in the 112 lb weight class, going 32-6 on the season.  Derek's career record now stands at 65-15,  an outstanding accomplishment and when joined with Shoff"s career record of 74-1 and Michael Cox's season record of 21-17 the future looks quite bright for wrestling in the sophomore class. Showing the heart of a warrior, Mitch Nuss battled back from a disappointing 1st round loss where he was ahead most of the match and won 3 hard fought matches to earn 6th place.  I know I speak for the parents, coaches and many in the community when I say we are very proud of these young men and all that they have accomplished.  Thank you for showing us that with hard work and goals, Sutton wrestlers can compete with the best and be the best.
