STATE CHAMPIONS!!!

Golf Team Wins State; Wiebe Individual Champion

June 08, 2010

The 2010 golf season marked the 10-year anniversary of the sport at Sutton High School. Until this season, only one team had ever qualified for state which was in 2009 where the team finished 13th out of 15. Along with that, no Sutton golfer had ever won an individual medal at the state meet. That was all replaced with the 2010 season.

The Mustangs completed the two-day state tournament at the Kearney Country Club, three shots ahead of runner-up Archbishop Bergen (Fremont) who had won the Class D state meet at the same venue a year prior. Also to note, Reid Wiebe completed the 36-hole meet at even par with a score of 142, two shots ahead of H-T-R-S Calvin Freeman, to claim individual honors.

The State Championship was the perfect ending to the perfect season for the Mustang golfers. While seniors Lance Griess, and Paul Van Kirk will surely be missed next season, there is a very strong group ready to contend as they will be out to defend their title as State Champions.

Scores:

Team:    Day 1 - 310        Day 2 - 314        Total - 624

Individual: Reid Wiebe - 72-70=142; Lance Griess - 75-85=160; Lance Spongberg - 80-80=160; Dustin Scheidemann - 83-79=164; Paul Van Kirk - 90-93=183
