The 4th graders always have an amazing year in science. First quarter begins with an exploration of ideas and inventions. Second quarter students dive into exciting water concepts. The human body is at the center of the third quarter. Fourth quarter is always just as exciting, as students gain knowledge concerning sound.
The final science unit, the sound unit, is centered around exciting, informative experiments that give students an introduction to the physics of sound. Students make codes, use drop chambers, and become fluent in sound vocabulary. Through the experiments, fourth graders learn about pitch, volume, frequency and sound discrimination. Favorite activities include using the tuning forks, tone generator, water phones, xylophones, and kalimbas.
The students are wrap up the year by choosing a project relating to any of the units covered throughout the year. Projects range from learning about the lobes of the brain to trying to find the fastest way to melt ice.
