Spring Athletes Prepare for State Performances

May 13, 2008

The Sutton athletes have had busy spring seasons competing at events throughout the area. Track meets and golf invites have been physical proof of what spring sports are all about living in Nebraska. On any given day, there were three elements of weather in which these teams were forced to compete against, in addition to themselves and the competitions. These are wind, precipitation, and cold temperatures. Any or all of the three were abundant throughout the entire spring season.

On Thursday, May 8th the track teams traveled to Geneva to compete at the district track meet. Upon completion, six girls from the Filly team earned the right to travel to Omaha Burke Stadium to compete with, and against, the best-of-the-best in the entire state in their respective events. Those competing are Jessica Osterhaus (Triple Jump); Anna Keller (High Jump); Mindy Cloet (100m, 200m); Macy Steinhauer (100m hurdles, 300m hurdles); the 4x100 Relay (Mindy Cloet, Jessica Osterhaus, Macy Steinhauer, and Randa Rose); the 4x400 Relay (Claire Bergen, Randa Rose, Jessica Osterhaus, and Macy Steinhauer)
Although the Mustang track team didn't qualify anyone for state, there were several personal records set and many individual places. Kyle Johnson paced the way by placing in all four events in which he participated.

On Monday, May 12th the Mustang golf team took part in the C-1 District at York Country Club. The course at York provides a challenge for a good golfer alone. However, wind blowing 25-30mph with gusts reaching 40mph, made even the good golfers shrug their shoulders in amazement. The Mustang team shot 388 which was good enough for sixth place. Brooks Wiebe finished sixth individually with a score of 88, earning the right to play in the state meet next week at Kearney Country Club. He will take part in a 36-hole, two-day event against the elite in class C.

Best of luck to all of these individuals and bring home the gold!
