Crayfish

Learning about life cycles.

by Robin Griess

March 11, 2008

This year, as in the past, third graders are learning about life cycles by studying crayfish. Our crayfish arrived in mid January. We originally received 13 crayfish for the two third grade classes to share. We now have 6 crayfish left.

Part of learning about life cycles is having the cycle continue. In Mrs. Johnson’s third grade they may get the chance to see the full cycle. They currently have one female crayfish carrying eggs. A female crayfish may carry up to 200 eggs. She will carry her eggs for 2-3 weeks before they hatch. Once, they hatch the baby crayfish will be transparent to protect them from predators.

The students have thoroughly enjoyed learning and interacting with the crayfish. If the crayfish survive, students will be able to take them home at the end of the school year, with parents’ permission.
