Elementary: First Grade
Celebrate! Celebrate!
March 11, 2008
In late January the students in Miss Dirks' first grade class celebrated an important event--the 100th day of school! Since the beginning of the school year, the class has been building a number line, adding a new number each day. They have also counted a straw each day, grouping them in containers by ones, tens and now a hundred.
On the 100th day students were encouraged to wear something for the number 100. Someone had 100 hair bands in her pigtails. Another student had 100 safety pins clipped to his shirt. Others made necklaces with 100 pieces of cereal and others brought things made with 100 plastic building blocks.
Each student brought 100 small pieces of a food to make a snack for later in the day. All kinds of thins went into a big bowl--cereal, peanuts, marshmallows, crackers, M & M's, and pretzels. Students were especially excited when there was enough of the snack mixture left to enjoy as a snack the following day as well.
Students celebrated the number 100 by making red and black ladybugs which they decorated with 100 spots made by using ink and their pencil erasers. The class divided into groups and made colorful paper chains that had 100 links in them. They also brainstormed and came up with a list of 100 things you could find in a school.
The highlight of the day's events was a parade with the other kindergarten, first and second grade students. Students paraded through the elementary and the high school hallways with signs, flags and floats. Everyone had a great time while learning more about the number 100!
